Black urad production may fall this year because of acess rainfall

Excess rainfall in Bundelkhand and parts of Rajasthan growing urad concerns yield this year

Areas like Bundelkhand covering regions of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Madhya Pradesh (MP) [accounting for one third production of India] Iand State like Rajasthan are key regions (of producing Black matpe (urad), has received excess rainfall this year which may have chance to reduce production this year.

Already area covered under cultivation till 25 july this kharif season was lowered down by 6.75% than the last season which counts to 16.59 lakhs hectare compared to 17.70 lakhs hectare last kharif. Sowing time is nearing its end, most of the regions has completed their sowing while a few are remaining yet to complete it

Area under urad has been declining from the past 4-5 years because of the adverse climatic conditions which affects its quality thus forcing the farmers to shift to alternative crops like corns.

Imports & Price trend

Imports in India has increased from 6.24 lakh tonne (2023-24) to 8.2 lakh tonne last year where import prices has declined from ₹94/ kg in Oct 2024 to just ₹71/ kg in July 2025.
