Centre may blend soyameal with Bharat atta

In order to increase people’s protein intake, the government has proposed blending soyameal with Bharat Atta. This move is also expected to boost domestic consumption of soyameal, especially at a time when its exports are underperforming.

NAFED assistance

NAFED has been assigned the task by the government to study the feasibility of initially blending 5% soyameal with Bharat Atta and to assess its impact on cost.

Soybean is a Kharif season crop, primarily grown in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, and contains 18–20% oil content. It was introduced in India to enhance protein intake, but it is mainly cultivated for oil extraction. The byproduct, soyameal, is used by animal and aqua feed companies such as Godrej Agrovet Ltd (GAVL), Avanti Feeds Ltd, Kemin, Cargill, and others.

This move has also come forward in order to increase the yield per hectare of oilseed crop as per NMEO (National Mission on Edible Oilseeds)

To make soyameal prices more competitive in the global market, Davish Jain, Chairman of the Soybean Oil Processors Association of India (SOPA), has urged the government to provide transport assistance for soyameal exports and to offer concessions on railway freight as well.

Price trends:-
Due to higher domestic prices exports has also declined from 19.24 lt to 17.08 lt last fiscal
